Sherlock Holmes

Postby Relinda » Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:10 pm

So, I've always wanted to read "The Hound of the Baskervilles" but never got around to it. Well, my S-I-L bought "The Complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" It's a beautiful hardbound, gold leafed book! (pretty books really make me want to read them :blush )

Anyway, I decided to read THOFB outloud to DS........We are LOVING IT!!! :love Who knew S.H. would be laced with subtle humor and dry wit??? Even Ds is getting into it. There are sections that require a bit of explanation (mostly due to different vocabulary) but not as many as I though there would be. He is following along quite well and even snickers at the appropriate moments. :bouncy

Now, I want to read the whole book---all of his adventures!!! Have any of you read alot of S.H.'s????? What were your thoughts????? :)

Last week ds & I listened to a recording of one of the SH short stories "The Case of the Speckled Band" & read about the author and how he came up with his stories. Today we were discussing our next read-aloud together and I said "Lets find something we'll both enjoy, but NOT Hardy Boys!" You gave me the perfect idea & ds is interested!! :hi5 We'll be at the library Wed. so we'll check one of those out. We've never read any SH, and I never did while younger, but we both love mysteries so I hope we enjoy them. :bouncy

I own a faux-leather copy of the complete works of Arthur Conan Doyle and have read ALL the Sherlock Holmes stories. I LOVE them - still do. I keep thinking, some day, when I can sit and read in the daytime, I'll work through them again.

Dd likes Jim Weiss' retelling of the SH stories. I'm hoping, some day soon, she'll want to read them for herself! :yay

OH have read all of them and reread all of them... and love them!!
It's one of the MUST reads in literature, I think.

Had a wonderful "all SH stories and novels" in a single edition, and someone borrowed them years ago (Dh was the one who did it, I wouldn't have, probably--borrowed by a nice man, with a nice large family, all in our [then] church home group, but that edition had sentimental value attached... since then dh got me a faux leather type, and it's just not the same (font size, etc.). Never did get the copy back and the man said he didn't borrow it and of course dh doesn't remember. :hot My books are my friends and all of that is fightin' words!)

So, we finished The Hound of the Baskervilles! We both really enjoyed it. :yay I think we will try to tackle a few more S.H. stories since we both enjoyed that one so much. :veryhappy

I'm so glad we gave it a try and wasn't intimidated by the size of the book!! :bouncy
